Three-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore has taken out the richest event on the women’s world tour, the Beachley Classic, to put herself in a strong position to claim a fourth world title.
after defeating world no.2 Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, to triumph in the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in Sydney, Australia today.
In a thrilling climax to event no.4 of the 2010 ASP Women?s World Tour, Gilmore came from behind to win, showing experience and patience in building 4-6ft (1.5-metre waves) at the host venue of Dee Why.

Following four consecutive lay days, the world-class Dee Why point break delivered the ultimate finale, churning out high-scoring, quality waves and a massive 2000-plus crowd for the world?s top female surfers.

Gilmore has now won three of the four events she has contested this year after taking victory on the Gold Coast in early March before winning at Bells Beach in the same month.

?It?s incredible how good this feels,? said Gilmore. ?Competing in Australia is one of my favourite things to do. I feel comfortable in these waters and have won this event a few times. I guess I?m on a roll and I?m feeling good.?

Queen Gilmore made a perfect start to the 35-minute decider, showing plenty of speed, power and flow to net a 7.00 before Fitzgibbons hit back to take the lead for the majority of the final.
Fitzgibbon’s second-placing shores up her position on the tour, now sitting just behind Gilmore in the rankings.

The former world junior champion earned her spot in the final with a thrilling win against 2004 world champion Sofia Mulanovich.

Needing a score of 5.2 with eight seconds to go, Fitzgibbons picked up a wave and rode it impressively to the shore and was awarded seven points for her efforts.

The win was Gilmore’s 15th world tour victory and her first Beachley Classic titles since 2007.

COMMONWEALTH BANK BEACHLEY CLASSIC FINAL RESULTS:
Heat 1: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) 14.20 def. Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 12.40

Carissa Moore (HAW), 17, 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour rookie, has claimed the 2010 TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival over Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, in pumping offshore barrels at Fitzroy Beach.

The third stop on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour season, the TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival enjoyed a veritable cornucopia of conditions throughout the six-day event window, culminating in exciting fashion today in front of a capacity crowd at the primary site.

Moore wasted little time in the hard-fought Final, posting an excellent 9.33 out of a possible 10 on her opening wave for a flurry of electrifying backhand surfing. The Hawaiian rookie was quick to back it up, lighting up another running lefthander with unfettered ferocity and a complete repertoire of maneuvers for 9.83, collecting the highest heat total of the event, a 19.16 out of a possible 20, as well as the victory.

“The conditions definitely turned on for us this afternoon and I knew I couldn’t leave Sally (Fitzgibbons) a lot of room to maneuver,” Moore said. “She has been getting the highest scores every round and she’s so dangerous. I just felt like I was building momentum throughout the event and fortunately peaked in the Final.”

Following a relatively slow start to 2009 with two Equal 9th place results, Moore (who has long been considered one of the most promising young surfers on the planet) was growing frustrated with her former 9th place ranking. Today’s win vaults the young Hawaiian to ASP Women’s World No. 6 and establishes her as a legitimate threat to the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

“I wasn’t very happy with the start of my year,” Moore said. “I expected more out of myself and couldn’t figure out what was going on. Things really fell into place for me here in New Zealand and it’s a great result for my campaign this year. I’m really excited and looking forward to Sydney.”

In a show of unprecedented generosity, Moore chose to donate her US$15,000 first prize winnings to the local Waitara Bar Boardriders Club, a gesture that received undulating support from the thousands in attendance.

“I fell in love with New Zealand and I’m fortunate enough to have great support from my family and my sponsors and that puts me in a position to do things like this,” Moore said. “The Haka that the Waitara Bar Boardriders Club performed before the event was beautiful and they’ve really opened up their community and waves to us. For this, I am very thankful.”

Despite Moore’s domineering start to the Final, Fitzgibbons fought back admirably collecting a 7.50 and an 8.67, but it would not be enough to overtake Moore.

“It’s frustrating but Carissa (Moore) just went mad in the Final,” Fitzgibbons said. “The waves were really good, and it was an exciting heat. I’m disappointed to not get the win, but it’s still a good result for me.”

Today’s Runner-Up finish matches Fitzgibbons’ career best and moves her from 5th to 2nd on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, positioning her for a run at the prestigious ASP Women’s World Title throughout the remainder of the year.

“It matches my best result and I’m sure I’ll be happy with it down the road, but to come so close and not win still stings right now,” Fitzgibbons said. “I feel like I am surfing well and surfing smart and it will happen eventually. To be second on the rankings now is great for me and the goal is to reign in Steph (Gilmore) over the next couple events.”

Sarah Mason (NZL), 15, wildcard into the TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival, went on a rampage in Taranaki, causing the shock elimination of reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, in Round 3 yesterday before dispatching of compatriot and goofy-footed powerhouse Paige Hareb (NZL), 19, in this morning’s Quarterfinals. Despite her juggernaut run, the youngster was unable to overcome eventual winner Moore in their Semifinal bout.

“I’m disappointed to not make the Final but not upset at how I’ve gone here,” Mason said. “I was just excited to win the wildcard spot, but it’s been the best week of my life getting to surf against Steph (Gilmore) and Paige (Hareb). It gives me great confidence moving ahead and I do feel like one day I can be up there contesting for the world title.”

Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 26, former ASP Women’s World Champion (2005), was another standout in the event and looked good for a berth in her first Final of the year. However, a late Semifinal charge by Fitzgibbons eliminated any hope of a chance at the event title and Hedges received an Equal 3rd.

“This is my third Equal 3rd in a row and it is a disappointment to miss out on the Final again,” Hedges said. “I suppose it’s good that I’ve been consistent, but to win a world title, you have to make Finals and win events. That’s the goal ? to win the world title. Still though, 3rd is okay and I’ll just try to refocus and prepare for Sydney next week.”

The next stop on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour will be the Commonwealth Back Beachley Classic held at Dee Why Point in Sydney, Australia from April 21 through 26, 2010.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion, has claimed the 2010 Rip Curl Women’s Pro presented by Ford Fiesta over opponent Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, in a hard-fought Final.

Event No. 2 on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro came to a dramatic close today, with the unstoppable, young Australian collecting her third Bells Title in four attempts.
“I’m a bit overwhelmed by this,” Gilmore said. “To ring the bell once is an amazing feeling, but three times? I don’t think the gravity of it has sunk in yet. It’s an incredible event and I feel very fortunate to have achieved such success here so far.”

While not necessarily a standout in the earlier rounds, Gilmore appeared to bide her time at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro, peaking on the final day of competition with some incendiary performances.

“I wasn’t in a hurry,” Gilmore said. “It’s probably not the most exciting frame of mind for the spectators, but I know that it doesn’t totally count until the Final, so that was my game plan and I guess it kind of worked for me. It’s what I’ve used for a lot of events and it seems to work.”
Having collected two wins from two events in 2010, Gilmore now has a commanding lead as she hunts down a fourth ASP Women’s World Title.
“Two for two is definitely an unexpected start of the year but I guess when you’re not really expecting too much that’s when it all just comes your way,” Gilmore said. “Winning the World Title is such an incredible feeling – it’s quite rare so while I can, I just might as well keep winning. READ MORE

The opening event of then 2010 ASP World Tour season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast started the year off with a bang, bringing the greatest assemblage of surfing talent in history to one of the most iconic pointbreaks in the world, and the world’s best surfers shattered high-performance barriers once again.

“I’m so so happy right now – it’s the best feeling on Earth!” Burrow said. “It’s unreal. I have a good group of friends with me and my parents are here supporting me. To have everyone cheering me on in the final is really really special

Stephanie Gilmore

Surfing queen Stephanie Gilmore has kick started her quest for a fourth consecutive world crown in perfect style by taking out the season-opening Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks today.
In tricky 1m waves at the famous Gold Coast point break, the 22-year-old Australian powerhouse slaughtered 27-year-old Hawaiian veteran Melanie Bartels in the final and claimed her third Roxy Pro title.

The surfing in Fiji is world class and its no surprise when you consider that Fiji is a collection of over 300 islands and atolls surrounded by reefs, and is exposed to year round swell from the Southern Ocean.

Many Fiji Surfing breaks are famous, Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Desperations etc. These famous Fiji surf breaks tend to be close to island resorts such as Tavarua and Namotu and can be notoriously difficult to get access to.

But there are many other Fiji surf breaks that are accessible by boat if you know where to go and have the local knowledge to know where the best surfing will be on the day.

Ian Thomson your skipper and Fiji surfing guide has been involved in the sport, industry and lifestyle of surfing for more than 30 years. After his first trip to Bali in 1975 his passion for surfing Fiji island waves and Fiji reef breaks still remains as strong as ever. The desire to surf uncrowded perfect waves has been the momentum behind the thousands of miles covered in many tropical locations on sailing boats searching out these gems Fiji island waves and reef breaks more than satisfy that hunger.

10 years ago we started sailing and surfing Fiji and the more time spent here the more locations we find. From perfect barrelling pits to more mellow cruisy longboard type waves Fiji surfing has it all, and we know where these waves are.

Our Fiji surfing charters are tailored to your needs and ability, we can supply boards if necessary and will take you to the right locations. www.fijisafari.net

To create history in surfing Fiji’s first ever heat in an ISA World Championships, his mind must have wandered to the playful white sand beach of Natadola where balmy weather and water conditions.

Fortunately for Kama, event sponsors Quiksilver came through and donated a new wetsuit to the Sanasana lad the day before competition started.

This being Kama’s first trip abroad and the first time on the plane he was intimidated by the building swell, cold water and onshore wind making conditions difficult even for the highly fancied semi professional surfers from the traditional powerhouses of world surfing – Australia, Brazil, Hawaii and the USA.

It’s the first time Vanuatu and Fiji – as well as Indonesia to compete in an ISA World Championships.

The rated surfers found it hard going on the opening day of the event and most dialed back on their repertoire of tricks – deciding to play it safe and complete scoring waves rather than risk falling. Scores out of a possible 10 were in the 5, 6 and 7 range.

In Kama’s four person heat – Hawaiian Ian Gentil scored just over 5 points per wave to easily cruise through to the next round. The Tahitian was second – scoring 4.1 points per wave, the third placed surfer from Ecuador scored 2.6 points per wave and Kama just under one point per wave meaning he and the Ecuadorian move across to the repercharge round where they have one more chance against the other bottom of heat placers to win and come up against the top surfers on the other side of the draw.

Piha Beach, New Zealand

It was girl fever at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Piha today, with the Under 18 Girls´ surfing on day four in New Zealand.

With easing 4-6 ft (1.5m) beach break conditions, contest organizers opted to run qualifying rounds one and two of the under 18 girls on the main event podium, along with repercharge one and two of the under 16 boys and repercharge two of the under 18 boys on podium two.

After three days off, the girls shredded the south Piha line-up to shreds, pushing the limit in the race for all-important qualifying round three berths.

Defending U/18 girls ISA World Junior champion Tyler Wright (Lennox Heads, Aus) kicked off her title defense in style, netting both the opening round’s highest individual wave score (8.5) and two-wave combined total (14.00).

The talented regular foot, which is the youngest surfer to ever win an ASP World Tour event, looked composed in the bumpy conditions to easily beat the Portugal pairing of Ana Sarmento and Maria Abecasis.

“I’m very happy with this result,” said Wright. “ There were some fun waves coming through and I’m glad about how I surfed. I had to wait for a good one, but it finally came and I got the score.”

But she wasn’t so dominant in her qualifying round two heat, outscored by ISA 2019 World Surfing Games Champion, USA’s Courntey Conlogue in one of the best heats of the day. Both surfers going head-to-head in the tight exchange, unleashing their full repertoire of maneuvers to both progress into qualifying round three. Conlogue finished just ahead of Wright – 12.00 to 11.25.

“Things went well for me today,” said Conlogue. “The waves were fun, probably the best since we got here and I gave my best.” She added that defeating Wright was a confidence boost, but wasn’t her main focus. “Beating Tyler (Wright) is positive, but I compete against myself,” she said. “In the heat I just went for the best waves and tried to do my best.”

Team USA has another successful day with Lakey Peterson and Taylor Pitz joining Conlogue as qualifying round two winners.

Also through to qualifying round three was Australian Phillipa Anderson (Merewether), who bested USA’s Kaleigh Gilchrist in a dominating performance.

Anderson accrued a 14.00 total to Gilchrist’s 7.80. Tahiti’s Popkke Karelle and South Africa’s Tanika Hoffman finished in third and fourth respectively.

But history was made at Piha today. Seven year old Gabriella Aguirre (Ecuador) became the youngest competitor to ever compete at an ISA World Junior Surfing Championship event, lining up against Hawaiian Nage Melamed (Haw) and Tahiti’s Maro Mauraii in round one of the U/18 girls.

Competing against girls over double her age, Aguirre made her country proud by finishing an honorable third.

Hawaiian Alessa Quizon set the standard for qualifying round two, upstaging New Zealand surfer Jayda Fitzharris (Gisborne) to breeze through to qualifying round three.

Despite finishing in second, Fitzharris progressed through to qualifying round three, along with fellow Kiwi surfer Alexis Poulter (Raglan), who took line honors in her round two heat.

New Zealand surfing sensation Sarah Mason failed to progress through her talent-packed, qualifying round two heat, finishing fourth against France’s Canelle Bulard, Hawaii’s Malia Manuel and Australia’s Ellie-Jean Coffey.

Earlier today, Mason was lucky to squeeze through to round two, amassing a 6.00 total to finish in second behind the USA’s Taylor Pittz’s (13.25 total).

Mason, who was born in New Zealand but lives on the Gold Coast of Australia, started the 20-minute heat in a shaky fashion. After a few low scores, Mason hit back nailing a 4.65 to eventually hold onto second place.

Mason will now line-up in repercharge two when the Under 18 girl’s division recommences.

In the under 18 boy’s repercharge two, Hawaiian Tanner Hendrickson put his fellow competitors on notice, netting the highest individual wave score of the event so far (9.25) to storm into the next repechage round. Other winners in the division included fellow Hawaiian’s Keanu Aising, Ezekiel Lau and Kaimana Jaquias, as well as South African’s Michael February and David Brand, and USA’s Andrew Doheny and Peru’s Christobal De Col.

The Under 16 Boys repercharge two was also completed with Portugal’s Vasco Ribeiro and Miquel Blanco taking wins, along with France’s Ugo Robin and Andy Criere. Martin Jeri (Peru), Jarred Veldhuis (South Africa) and Tane Wallis (NZL).

In this round, South African Dylan Lightfoot surfed amazingly to get the highest combined total of the event so far of 16.25.

Competition is expected to continue tomorrow with improved conditions foreed for the prestigious tournament.
